The Birth of Emaline Musson
When I first found out I was pregnant, I started researching everything I could about childbirth. I came to the conclusion that if safely possible, I wanted to have a natural childbirth. I googled, “natural childbirth Bozeman,” and came across the newly opened Bozeman Birth Center. I took a tour and was convinced that the birth center would give me the most encouragement and support in reaching that goal of a natural birth. That pregnancy ended in miscarriage, but my relationship with the birth center had begun.

Mikelann’s personal care and compassion helped us through that difficult time and our next pregnancy which also ended in miscarriage. With my third pregnancy, I started progesterone right away and weekly ultrasounds at a local OB/GYN office.

I appreciated that Mikelann always encouraged medical intervention when necessary. She and my doctor communicated and kept each other updated. At eight weeks along, I was out of town and experienced heavy bleeding. Mikelann contacted the local hospital in the city I was in to find out where I should go. We followed her directions and were able to get right in at that hospital for an ultrasound, which miraculously showed us our baby’s beating heart! After about 4 weeks of taking it easy, I resumed normal activity and from then on, everything went smoothly!

At about 28 weeks, Mikelann noticed that the baby was breech. I still continued to plan on a natural birth because I was sure the baby would turn. I took a one day childbirth class from a lady in the Paradise Valley, and then took an abridged hypnobirthing class. We couldn’t get the whole class in because the instructor had already made plans to leave for an out-of-state class. Even with our shortened instruction, we learned so much. The principles we practiced to prepare for childbirth helped us even with normal life. I recommend hypnobirthing to whoever I can!

We tried everything we could to make the baby turn. Nothing worked! We finally had to schedule a c-section. I wasn’t giving up hope that the baby would turn, though, so I made the c-section date for the latest possible day they would allow. This baby absolutely refused to turn! My c-section was scheduled for 7:00 am on August 4th. At 1:00 am my water broke, and I went into labor.

I was able to practice my hypnobirthing techniques, and was amazed by how well they worked! I was actually very thankful to have gone into labor because I knew the baby was ready to come. It wasn’t going to turn and was coming that day no matter what! Our baby was born at the hospital via c-section. That was not the path I had chosen, but that’s what our baby chose, and we were along for the ride! The experience was wonderful! I was expecting it to be horrible because it’s not what I wanted, but I learned that having a healthy baby makes any stray from the plan completely OK! We hadn’t found out the gender of our baby, and I was so excited to hear my husband announce, “It’s a girl!” Just what I wanted! And if it were a boy, it would have been “just what I wanted,” too!

We are now expecting another baby and plan to do a vbac at the birth center. We’ll just have to wait to see if this baby’s plans align with our own!
