Charlie, Megan & Leelee Eubank
The birth of Leelee Margaret Eubank, January 6th, 2011
LeeLee’s due date was January 5th, and since I was born on my due date, I just assumed it would be the same for her. But the 5th came, I felt normal and nothing happened. So I went to bed that night, feeling impatient and hoping that it wouldn’t be long. Sure enough, that night, around midnight, I got up to use the bathroom, went back to bed, and suddenly, started feeling surges. Never having been in labor, I wasn’t sure if it was just cramps that I was feeling, but after feeling the steady pressure for about an hour, I decided that it must be the real deal, and I woke Charlie up. We started timing them, and they were very frequent and very regular. So, around 4am, we decided to call our wonderful midwife, Mikelann, and let her know that Leelee was on her way!
Shortly after that the surges slowed down and almost disappeared. I began to wonder if what I had been feeling was all in my head. Around 9am, we went over to Mikelann’s house to get checked out, and we were all VERY surprised to find out that I was already 5cm. dilated, which was great, considering I was feeling so well and only having surges once in a while. So, around noon, we headed over to The Birth Center, and I was still feeling good!
After we got settled at The Birth Center, I started to get more regular and more intense surges… but nothing that was unbearable. I used a yoga ball set up on the bed and leaned over it and swayed to my music with each surge. The music was key. I had spent months creating the ultimate birth playlist, with lots of fine-tuning and it ended up working amazingly well for me. Charlie gently rubbed my back, which was also really, really helpful. Around 2:30, when Mikelann arrived, she checked me again, and we were all surprised again to find out that I was completely dilated! At that point, we got in the tub to prepare for you to arrive!
Charlie gets a gold star for the day, since he got in the tub behind me and helped me cope with the intense surges that followed for the next 2 hours. He whispered in my ear, massaged my shoulders and my belly. He was stuck in that hot water with me for over 2 hours. He was hot and uncomfortable, but he didn’t complain once. He just took care of me. I couldn’t have done it without him.
Just when I thought I couldn’t take any more, I felt a “pop”, which was my water breaking. And then, just a few minutes later leelee’s head came out. I was able to reach down and feel her tiny head for the very first time, which was a surreal experience. Moments later, the rest of her little body just seemed to fly out. And then, relief.
She was placed on my chest with Charlie behind me, all three of us in the water together. A few moments later, we discovered Leelee was a girl, which was the most amazing surprise I’ve ever experienced! She was born naturally, free of any drugs or interventions, in a warm tub of water, with love surrounding her. It was magical. It was beautiful. It was perfect. It was the most amazing feeling in the world. The only word I can think of to describe seeing her perfect little face and feeling her warm
smooth skin for the first time is joy. Pure, total and overwhelming joy.
I was in love.
